LAKE CITY, FL – For the past two weeks, police officers across the United States and Florida have been increasing their efforts to promote safety through seat belt use as part of the Click It or Ticket campaign. The Lake City Police Department participated in this “wave” to help remind citizens to buckle up while driving.
From May 20th through June 2nd, LCPD conducted 378 total traffic stops. On these stops, 182 stops resulted in at least one citation, 173 resulted in a warning only, 16 resulted in physical arrests, and 7 resulted in issuance of criminal citations. LCPD officers wrote 170 tickets total for seat belt and child restraint violations in the two week period.
Lake City's Police Chief Argatha Gilmore stressed that safety belt enforcement is a priority all year and even outside of enforcement waves, motorists caught without a seat belt may face a citation.
In Columbia County, the penalty for a driver not wearing a seat belt is a $114 fine. If juveniles are unbelted in the vehicle, the ticket increases to $164 and places 3 points on the driver’s license.
