As Florida's Governor Scott touts the rebound of Florida's failed economy, Food Lion's parent company, Delhaize America is closing down all of Florida's Food Lion supermarkets. Delhaize America calls the closings a "key strategic decision."
From combined sources it appears that a total of 4,900 employees will be losing their jobs.
The Jacksonville Business Journal quoted a company press release this way:
Today’s actions will continue to solidify our U.S. operations and enable our company to focus on our successful brand strategy repositioning at Food Lion and the expansion of Bottom Dollar Food in new markets,” Ron Hodge, CEO of Delhaize America, said. “While these were difficult decisions given the impact on our associates, customers and communities, we believe these actions will enable us to better serve our customers in our markets with high density, while positioning the company for future growth.
While all the Florida stores are scheduled to be shut in the next 30 days, for now, the Lake City store is saved and is to become a Harveys.
