Lake Desoto Farmer’s Market
The
new weekly Lake DeSoto Farmers Market opened
last Saturday with a great crowd and much
success.
Market goers enjoyed fresh local produce,
honey, cheeses, jellies, and a wide assortment
of baked goods. The crowd enjoyed a variety of
art, children’s entertainment, canoe rides, and
live music as well.
This week, the market joins with F.A.M. Fest,
Haven Hospice's Annual Fundraiser, which will
run all day in downtown, including a morning 5K
run around Lake DeSoto and right past the new
weekly farmers market.
The market will be open each Saturday from 8
a.m. to 12 noon in Wilson Park, which is located
between Shands at Lakeshore Hospital and the
Columbia County Courthouse in downtown Lake
City.
For more information on participating as a
vendor or just to ask questions, contact Lake
City CRA Administrator Jackie Kite at (386)
719-5766.
Construction Permit Statistics
The Growth Management Department reports that
permitting and inspections fees for 2011 are up
about 22% over the same time last year.
Based upon FY 2011 budget permitting revenue,
the City is well on track to meet or exceed the
projections. Commercial development within the
City appears to be on the upswing with plans for
three new restaurants in process. The new
PetsMart Store will open during August 2011.
Neighborhood Stabilization Grant.
Columbia County is applying for Neighborhood
Stabilization Funds from the U.S. Department of
Housing and Urban Development and the Florida
Department of Community Affairs. If approved,
this funding program will allow Columbia County
to purchase and rehabilitate foreclosed and
abandoned residential properties to help
stabilize a target area.
The County has assessed over 35 different
target area options and narrowed it to specific
locations. One of the two Target Areas includes
portions of Lake City’s CRA district. The City
looks forward to success on funds approval and
to working with Columbia County on this low
income housing initiative.
