From City Manager Wendell Johnson

Florida City and County Management Association Training

Key City Staff members (City Manager, Executive Director of Administration, and HR Director) attended a FCCMA sponsored training session this week on “Health Insurance - understanding the rising costs and what to do about it.”

The Gehring Professional Services Group officials presented the session which covered two key issues: 1) The cost of Health Care Benefits and the Impact on City Budgets and 2) The impact of Health Care Reform.

Useful training topics covered during the session were:

a.    Health care trends in Florida

b.    The Municipal Healthcare Environment

c.    Health Care Cost Cutting Strategies, including case studies

d.    Health Care Reform including the “Patient Protection & Affordable Care Act” and the “Health Care & Education Reconciliation Act

e.    Health Care Changes which go into effect in 2010

f.     Health Care Compliance Notifications

The training was invaluable as the City is presently in the process of evaluating employee health care benefits and cost for the year 2011.

A workshop will be held this Monday at 6:30 p.m., September 20th, involving the City’s Health Care Program – City Hall Council Chambers.
