COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL – Columbia County's newly reelected Sheriff, Mark Hunter, is taking a tough stand on safety this long holiday weekend. Labor Day weekend has long been a time for friends and families to get together, celebrate the end of summer and barbeque. The Sheriff wants everyone to have a good time, but he is taking an extra tough stand on DUI.
Sheriff Hunter told the Observer, "This is a peak period. I plan to have extra deputies patrolling. We don't have a problem with people celebrating, but we want them to be safe and be responsible. We take DUI (driving under the influence) seriously all the time, but during these times we put extra emphasis on it because we want to make sure everybody can go out and have a good time and a safe time."
"We've briefed our guys on the signs of DUI and they will be on the lookout."
Sheriff Hunter made it perfectly clear, "If you drink and you drive, and you get caught, you're goin' to jail."
The Sheriff added, "We want people to have a good time, but we don't want to work an accident."
"I'm asking that the people work with us and help make this the safest Labor Day holiday we've had in recent history."
