Lake City Report - Feb 25, 2011
Downtown on top for the City Manager

From City Manager Wendell Johnson

Downtown Farmers Market

City staff has been working for several weeks to re-establish and greatly improve a Downtown Farmers Market.

A key meeting was recently held with the participation of the City Manager, City CRA Administrator and representatives from the University of Florida/IFAS, Columbia County Extension Office, National Farmers Market Coalition President, Columbia County Extension Agent, Florida Farm Bureau, Chamber of Commerce Director, and USDA Rural Development. The meeting objective was to discuss the process of reorganization and structuring a new Farmers Market for the Downtown. The group identified several options for market location and logistics.

Other planning meetings will be held to finalize the arrangements and hopefully the first event will be held during April or May 2011.

Columbia County Museum

Discussion between the City Staff and representatives of the Columbia County Historical Society has been ongoing since last November concerning relocation of the Museum within the Downtown Community Redevelopment Area.

There is high interest in the possibility and costs estimates and other operational issues associated with relocation have been considered.

The Community Redevelopment Agency will be requested to partner with the Historical Society on the relocation.

A follow-up meeting is scheduled for March 2, 2011, 9:00 a.m. at the Museum.
