Lake City Humane Society Awarded $75,000 Petco Foundation Grant: Lifesaving Work Will Continue

COLUMBIA COUNTY/ LAKE CITY, FL – Yesterday afternoon, the Lake City Humane Society of Columbia County announced it had been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Petco Foundation to support the sterilization of its shelter animals prior to adoption.

The Petco Foundation grant will help to sterilize approximately 1,000 shelter pets to prepare them for adoption into new homes. By offering pets that are already spayed or neutered as family companions, the grant will help to reduce the incidence of accidental litters, which will reduce the overall number of homeless pets in Columbia County.

According to the Humane Society/Animal Shelter's Executive Director, Laura Page, “This life-saving grant from Petco Foundation gives us the ability to not only prevent the birth of tens of thousands of unwanted puppies and kittens, but to also offer healthy, sterilized, microchipped, and vaccinated companions to Columbia County families at an affordable adoption price."

Ms. Page continued, "We are Petco Foundation Adoption Partners and the Foundation's support has given us the opportunity to participate in Mega Adoption and Super Adoption events in larger metropolitan markets. This has helped us find adoptive homes for over one hundred of our shelter pets in the last five months."

The Lake City Humane Society

The Lake City Humane Society is a nonprofit organization and the only open intake animal shelter serving Columbia County. Since 1964, the Lake City Humane Society has provided animal services for Lake City and for Columbia County. During the past twelve months, there has been a reduction in the euthanasia of companion animals of over 36%. In 2016, year-to-date, the euthanasia rate was only 11%.

The mission of the Lake City Humane Society is to assist the at-risk companion animals in Columbia County through sheltering, adoption, sterilization, and community outreach and education.

The Petco Foundation

The Petco Foundation believes every animal deserves to live its best life.  Since 1999 the Foundation invested more than $135 million in lifesaving animal welfare work.

Working with thousands of animal welfare partners, the Foundation inspires and empowers communities to make a difference by investing in adoption and medical care programs, spay and neuter services, pet cancer research, service and therapy animals, and numerous other lifesaving initiatives.

The Foundation's Think Adoption First© program partners with Petco stores and animal welfare organizations across the country to increase pet adoptions. The Foundation has helped more than 4.2 million pets find their new families.
