Columbia County Sheriff's Office: Deputies involved in shooting

COLUMBIA COUNTY, FL – On Wednesday, May 8, 2013, at approximately 11:50 pm, deputies with the Columbia County Multi-Jurisdictional Task Force were involved in a confrontation while Task Force deputies were conducting a narcotics investigation at a home on 611 NW Bronco Terrace.

When deputies attempted to make contact with persons inside the home, a suspect exited the house armed with a shotgun. The deputies ordered the suspect to drop the weapon. The suspect ignored the commands of the deputies and fired the shotgun at the deputies. The Task Force deputies returned fire with their pistols.

The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. There were no injuries.

According the Sgt. Seifert, Sheriff Hunter requested the assistance of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement in order to ensure a transparent investigation.

A search warrant has been sought for the residence and is being served this morning.

The deceased suspect will be transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Jacksonville to determine the cause of death and his identity.

As is the policy of the Columbia County Sheriff's Office, the deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave pending the FDLE investigation.

Sgt. Seifert advised that additional details will be made available upon the completion and closure of the FDLE and Sheriff’s Office investigations.
